When Oliver Stone made Wall Street, he was riding high from the commercial and principal success of Platoon (Special Edition) . His father, Lou Stone, had been a stockbroker on Wall Street in Novel York City and this film was a son’s scheme of paying tribute to his father. Almost twenty years later, it has become one of the quintessential snapshots of the financial scene in the United States and epitomizes the essence of capitalism, greed and materialism that was so prevalent in the 1980s.

Michael Douglas owns the role of Gekko and by extension dominates the movie with his larger than life character. He gets most of the film’s best dialogue and delivers it with such conviction. There is a scene between Bud and Gekko in a limousine where he tells the younger man how the financial world works, how it operates and lays it all out, pushing Bud hard to go into business with him. It is one of the strongest scenes in the movie because you really bear what Gekko is saying and how Bud could be seduced by his words.

The culmination of Douglas’ performance is his distinguished lauded, often quoted, “Greed is apt” speech that his character gives to a shareholders’ meeting of Teldar Paper, a company he is planning to purchase over. He concludes by saying, “Greed is right; greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms, greed for life, for money, for admire, knowledge — has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed, you designate my words — will establish not only Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the U.S.A.” This is one of the best delivered monologues ever effect to film as Douglas goes from charming to downright threatening and benefit again, succinctly summing up the essence of ‘80 capitalism and greed.

The recent DVD did not have many extras but the quality of what was included was great. They have all been carried over to this fresh release (minus the trailers) but do the original extras really merit a double dip?

There is an audio commentary by co-writer and director Oliver Stone. Stone talks about Michael Douglas’ early struggles with the big amount of dialogue he had to declare and how he dealt with it. The filmmaker is candid with his shortcomings and those of others (i.e. Daryl Hannah, Charlie Sheen, etc.) . As always, Stone delivers the goods, offering all kinds of intelligent insights into the making of the film.

The second disc features a unusual introduction by Oliver Stone that is brief and really should have been assign on the first disc.

Another recent extra is “Greed is Safe,” an hour-long retrospective documentary with Hal Hoolbrook, John C. McGinley, Charlie Sheen and Michael Douglas amongst others returning to offer their impressions of the financial world depicted in the movie. This big doc examines the appeal of Gekko and why he inspired people in the business world.

Also recent to this edition is over 20 minutes of deleted scenes with optional commentary by Stone. There is a nice microscopic scene with Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller as one of Bud’s clients. Also included is an earlier scene where Bud and Darian (Hannah) meet in a bar but Stone gash it because the Hamptons scene at Gekko’s house was stronger. The filmmaker puts all of these scenes into context and why there were nick.

Finally, carried over from the current edition is “Money Never Sleeps: The Making of Wall Street,” a estimable, 47-minute making of documentary. There is very diminutive overlap with the “Greed is Agreeable” documentary.

If you’re a fan of this film and already maintain the previous edition, the recent extras definitely warrant a double dip. They are quite big in nature and shed more light on this salubrious film.

To eye this movie in Moscow in 1988 as a student was a liberating and exhilarating experience. Here is the capitalism close-up, warts and all. And we loved it. In three more years the Soviet communism will be dismantled, free market hurriedly introduced, and some of my friends and fellow students will move to become very rich people themselves. I did not know then, that Gordon Gekko, a villain who incidentally was noteworthy admired by me, was a thinly veiled portrait of Ivan Boesky. Boesky, who incidentally was a son of Russian immigrants, became a center of the biggest insider trading scandal and government investigation in the 1980s, which let to the collapse of junk bond powerhouse firm Drexel Burnham. However, I knew that Gekko must be remarkable more than a villain, otherwise how this monstrous character could be so handsome? Of course, a mountainous section of it was a capable acting by Michael Douglas. But watching this film now, 17 years later, gave me an opportunity to ponder more on the subject from a different perspective. I assume now that Gekko’s character is archetypal and has the same qualities as Bulgakov’s Woland from `Master and Margarita’. He is the Wall Street Mephistopheles, the Mammoth seducer, not impartial some greedy upstart and `faux bonhomme’. But one of the qualities of Lucifer is that he `brings out the light’, he helps to illuminate things, partly because of his hold darkness. Untimely, in the movie it was his turbulent encounter with Gekko, which helped Bud Fox to obtain his character and, in a method, redeem himself. So in some odd scheme, the movie is a Wall-Street-version of age-old narrative of Faust.

When I first rented Gloomy Sheep I understanding that I might find a few laughs from the film and that would be that. When I finished the film I had done a complete 180, thinking how this reminded me a lot of a newer Expressionless Alive. This isn’t to say that the two movies are similar in space because they aren’t, but the two have a lot in favorite. Here we have a simple premise, genetic mutation, applied to a beastie that isn’t really something you normally mediate “monster” with. That worked out well, too, because sheep weren’t objective fluffy minute abominations to contend with. Depending on the size of the beast, the fluffiness, and the amount of teeth it is willing to lend to the wail, they can seem quite deranged – especially when they’re double-dipping into a vat of humanity. We also have a main character, a stupefied main character, with issues locked both in the past and the explain.

And then we have the humor, bizarre and cuddly and poor all on its occupy, making a shapely butterfly to witness buzz the skyline.

One thing I have to say about Unlit Sheep is that the previews really didn’t do it justice. I’m not clear you could do it justice, either, but having such a salubrious movie on your hands and having it spread by word-of-mouth is a dusky affair when you reflect about it. I impart that’s been the blight of a lot of gargantuan shaded comedies in their time; you have an belief that seems queer but that works, an audience that will grow to cherish it once they ogle it, and a bunch of film critics that will herald it the cross device. Such can be expected, but so distinguished the pity when the product is worth seeing. The acting is safe, the prosthetics is grand, the sheep fighting humans is comic, and the tiny place pieces hiding here and there kept everyone I know rolling because it seemed so beautifully constructed. I honestly never imagined myself as a fan of a sheep body checking someone until I saw it.

I really needed to scrutinize it twice honest to net enough.

Granted, this isn’t for everyone. It does have its blooming amount of gore, a style of humor that is dim and yet light at the same time, and it makes fun of a lot of different types of people. Hippies suffer the film wrath here, for instance, and so do the varied lot of journalists and business class people. That’s pat of the beauty of it, too; not everyone will like it but, if the view seems to be silly to it, it will be sooo worthy better than you expected.

Highly recommended for anyone keen (you already know who you are) .

Black sheep has ingredients from all kinds of classic fear films sprinkled heavily with shaded comedy, tons of gore, and tremendous scenery, fright fans gain a rare treat in this order to video fangoria seal of approval film.

INGREDIENTS:

One fragment excited scientist messing with nature film; two brothers, one the prodigal son with a alarm of sheep returns to select his fraction of the family farm and the “shaded sheep” inappropriate brother who is conducting experiments in his laboratory with sheep genes. And no doubt the experiments go baaaad.

One portion zombie film; a depraved between 28 Days Later and Shaun of the boring. More so Shaun, but the animal rights people getting keen has the 28 days influence. When these mutated sheep are free they turn into blood thirsty beasts hungry for flesh. Perhaps all zombie films with their messages borrow from sheep, like Dawn and the aimless zombie like people mocking our consumer hungry society at malls, maybe there not zombies or people but; sheople.

One Fragment Were wolf movie; when a sheep bites you instead of becoming a blood thirsty zombie you actually transform into a sheep and then go looking for food. There is a portion at the waste reminiscent of the classic werewolf movie An American Werewolf In London.

Throughout all this we catch two of the most indecent sides of animal rights. On one side we have the beautiful greenie who believes the food we eat and farts we build contribute to the greenhouse carry out, and her boyfriend who in trying to abet causes more death. Then we have the immoral scientist who throws all the genetic mutations in a hole labeled official dumping location and is willing to extinguish for money and profit. It pokes fun at the extremists in a fun arrangement.

If you want a substantial newly released panic comedy along the lines of shaun of the tiresome with sheep this is for you. If you like man v. nature tales and like them serious and filled with trusty frights check out Isolation also exclaim to dvd this year and stout as well.

The dvd looked mammoth and far from grievous budget but it’s the soundtrack that stands out. My rear speakers worked so effectively at one fraction I though something had fallen off the wall.

This is an salubrious documentary. The film has the tactics of a covert operations task force, the watchability of a fiction action flick, and a desire to pronounce the public on a tragedy that is unlawfully being ignored. A must glimpse for anyone fervent in the environment, health, and the preservation of an bright, phenomenal mammal.

The original documentary “The Cove” tells a yarn the Japanese government would rather not be made public.

Richard O’Barry, the well-known subject of the film, wrestles with almost constant feelings of remorse. In the mid 60s, he served as the technical advisor for the successful television prove “Flipper”; he helped accept, remark and care for the dolphins who played the title character. The success of the series is viewed as the catalyst to the creation of “Ocean Parks” around the world, places like the various “Sea World” parks, where thousands of people visit every year to inspect dolphins, whales and other sea creatures earn tricks. O’Barry learns of a little fishing village in Japan, Taijii, where the main business is to assume dolphins and herd them into captivity. They sell the best dolphins to parks, exhibits, “swimming with dolphins” type businesses and more, earning as grand as $150,000 for the best of the best. But what do they do with the rest of these creatures? The ones that don’t sell? O’Barry knows and he wants to point to the truth to the world in an peril to assign a halt to it.

He enlists the assist of Louie Psihoyos, a documentary filmmaker, who assembles a team of people. They start to bag all of the equipment they will need for the project and develop many plans on how to infiltrate the secret areas before they area off for Japan. As soon as they advance, the sheer amount of baggage (all of their equipment) catches the attention of the authorities and they are snappy under surveillance. The police visit O’Barry many times, each time trying to gather him to admit his guilt. He doesn’t trust them and they don’t own him.

As soon as they reach in Taijii, O’Barry gives them a tour, always wearing a face screen, worried some of the fishermen will slay him if they could rep their hands on him. They pass a Dolphin Museum, complete with a tickled, smiling dolphin painted on the side. O’Barry expeditiously explains how ironic this is.

Using techniques that are probably more current to a “Mission Impossible” sequel, they approach up with a idea to infiltrate this heavily guarded state, set some hidden cameras and catch some proof on film.

As we peek them go through these incredibly over the top security measures, the anecdote slowly comes into focus. This is one of the most moving elements of the epic, of the film. Initially, O’Barry appears as though he could be a crackpot, the type of guy who probably smoked too many illegal substances once and now sees conspiracies around every corner. But as the chronicle progresses, we originate to glance what he is talking about and realize he is apt, impartial extremely passionate about the cause.

As he and the other volunteers work their blueprint through the concept, we prefer up more pieces of the puzzle until we learn the chunky truth.

And the truth is plain. And watching video of this is only more disturbing.

Naturally, these fishermen have gone through the inconvenience of capturing these dolphins. The dolphins that aren’t purchased by a “Sea World” like organization must be set aside to generous utilize. And the utilize these fishermen advance up with is graceful unsettling.

This is a film we should all eye, to benefit spread the word. If we spread the word, we can establish a close to what is happening in Taijii, Japan.

BELLA is one of those unpredictable films that usually may not pick up noticed amidst an array of movie choices to perceive. As the title states, it is a film about treasure that is deeply rooted care for between friends and family. And it is a film about living, then losing, but regaining the American dream; we peruse the dream lived by one Puerto Rican-Mexican American family, which reveals their rich culture of family, food, language, and religion. Although most of the film is spoken in English, there are a few scenes in Spanish accompanied with subtitles. And it is fitting that the film takes set within the so-called melting pot that is Fresh York City.

BELLA runs a cramped over 90 minutes, but there are plenty of complexities within the storyline. The film also confronts the state of perceptions, and how people observe one another without complete communication. As the film proceeds, the character’s stories are intricately told in rapidly snapshots. The most involving aspect of the film is how it starts at a speedily dash revealing fragments of the main characters’ lives, Jose (Eduardo Verastegui), a Chef, and Nina (Tammy Blanchard), a waitress, who work for Jose’s brother, Manny (Manny Perez) . One day Nina is 20 minutes tedious for work because she was very ill; unfortunately she gets fired without having to completely clarify her location — she’s pregnant. And this incident begins the film, and Nina’s constant pondering of what to do with the rest of her life, support the child or abort it, and Jose confronting his demons of a past life he left slack four years ago.

There are plenty of provocative scenes in the film that tug at the heartstrings. However, there are two scenes that stood out. One of them is when Nina and Jose traipse along the street and talk to a blind man who makes paper origami figures, and offers Nina a figure that looks like a frog. Not shining that he is blind, it is only when he asks Nina to picture to him what the city streets perceive like, that she realizes his blindness, and the second is the surprise ending of the film. It is scenes like these that fabricate the littlest or biggest tokens of kindness more meaningful in one’s life.

Alejandro Gomez Monteverde wrote and directed Bella, and the film won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. After watching the film, it is beneficial of an Academy Award nomination as well. Indeed, this is a gem of a film that any movie viewer may want to gain a gawk because of its ample storytelling and film making.

On a whim, my wife and I checked out this movie in the theaters a few months ago–and loved it. So we brought it home on DVD tonight to discover with our teen daughter and her boyfriend. “What’s it about? ” she wanted to know. I tried to define it was about a Mexican soccer star who’s done jail time, and a NY waitress who’s pregnant and loses her job…And then I said, “Objective witness it with us. If you’re bored to tears after fifteen minutes, then go do something else.”

This litmus test seemed to work. We sat through the movie, laughing, getting teary-eyed, and warmed by this story’s simple passion and grace. “Bella” is shot with huge like for its characters. Even the unlikeable ones become special by the raze. Following mostly one day in the lives of Jose (soccer-star-turned-chef) and Nina (waitress-and-expecting), it’s hard not to become wrapped up in their pasts, their burdens, their hopes, and their hesitant dreams. Together, they obtain upon a friendship that will give them both a chance at redemption. The plan these elements near together is subtle and magical.

From the comical scenes around the dinner table, to the heart-wrenching flashback, to the understated conclusion, “Bella” is approach perfection. Watching it a second time, I was awed by the gentle economy of every shot, every scene, and each facial expression. While I loved “Juno” for its edge and endless wit, “Bella” deals with the state of unwanted pregnancy too, and does so with its contain recent charm.

In the last year, this has to rate in my top five well-liked films. It’s a film the whole family can discover, though remarkable of its sensitivity will be better appreciated by those who have lived a few years and faced some of life’s struggles. What a joy!

The merits of this film are distinct enough to simply summarize: it is the one and only unusual shoestring budget classic. No, the spot isn’t current, but that hasn’t stopped others from picking it up and running with it, sometimes in different directions, and sometimes even more successfully (leer “Jacob’s Ladder” for a deeper, and darker, retract) . But I doubt that ANYone ANYwhere has made a better film for less money; as someone below wrote, “”Blair Witch”, eat your heart out.”

And then to have it released on a Criterion DVD, well, it objective doesn’t procure any better than that! OK, we may not need TWO versions, …. And the second DVD isn’t unprejudiced a filler: you derive anything and everything you could judge of associated with the movie, including “now and then” visits to the film sites, a expansive hour-long tribute, a history of the film company, stills, probably more than all but the most compulsive fan would want but you won’t feel as though you’ve gotten short-changed! As always, the steady reason we cherish Criterion is the quality of their prints – they are simply THE BEST you are going to contemplate. Anyone who has seen this film on one of its numerous cheapie incarnations on VHS will be cheerful with this version – you won’t absorb how valid the describe quality is.

I have to say “gain this now, before it’s discontinued”. This edition can NOT be bettered; you will NEVER EVER sight a better version of this classic sleeper.

Now, Criterion, when are you going to release Robert Wise’s “The Haunting”, hmmmm?

Carnival of Souls is an primitive B-film that you might have seen on broken-down Saturday night scare shows. As Herk Harvey (the director) said, this film was shot on a budget that wouldn’t have sustained the opening moments of Relieve To The Future. However, this film is able to keep a creepy and oppressive atmosphere throughout, and that is the major achievement. Even though I knew when every “scary” moment was coming, and I guessed the ending 20 minutes before the film actually ended, that knowledge didn’t kill it for me. That’s how strong the movie is, that you can delight in the film even if you knew everything about it. The acting is stiff and the dialogue is often stilted, but that unbiased adds to the peculiar and sunless atmosphere of the film. And the Criterion release is a exact gem. Two discs, the first has the theatrical release of the film, and the second has the director’s lop. The film looks extraordinary. I’ve yet to explore such an ancient and cheaply made movie scrutinize so reliable. And the extras are also big. Documentaries, outtakes, interviews, and oh, that organ music. If you’re a fan of scare, you must occupy this film. If you’re a film buff, you must possess it. If you’re a DVD afficionado, you must absorb it. If you’re unbiased looking for a suitable movie to examine on a Saturday night, then please, resolve this one. It delivers.
