Let's face it, before Blade (1998), X-Men (2000) and Spider-Man (2002), Marvel Comics really didn't have distinguished luck in getting successful films made based on their characters. The reason? Because they would often sell the movie rights to anyone who had two coins to rub together, releasing cinematic flops like Dr. Irregular (1978), Howard the Duck (1986), Captain America (1989), and even a Amazing Four movie that was so terrible it never saw the light of day, as it was too dreadful to even release on video. And then there was The Punisher (1989), a character introduced in the 70's within the pages of The Improbable Spider-Man, protest 129, circa February 1974, a venerable police detective, now vigilante, taking revenge on criminals, motivated by the death of his family. Most people I know who've seen the film have glorious distinctive feelings about it, ranging from abominate to severe disfavor, but I always idea it was fine fine, considering...

The film, directed by Note Goldblatt, whose notable credits include editing films like The Howling (1981), The Terminator (1984), and Just Lies (1994), stars Dolph Lundgren, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Jerome Krabbé. Yeah, I know what you're thinking...Dolph Lundgren? I believe a number of people had instant reservations when hearing Dolph, certainly an interminable dweller of the B movie circuit, pre-judging the film unfairly. Lou Gossett, Jr. brings a runt star power to the table, but he also is no stranger to B movie fans appearing in films like Jaws 3-D (1983), Firewalker (1986), and any of the four or so Iron Eagle films.

The film opens with a television news characterize, giving us some expository background with regards to a mafia type recently acquitted of the crime of killing detective Frank Castle (Lungren) and his family five years prior. Turns out the decimation of the mafia families hasn't gone unnoticed, as the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) has decided to depart in and acquire a controlling interest in criminal activities within the city, a hostile takeover, to say the least. Sounds pleasing to the Punisher, as if the criminals are killing themselves off, less work for him...until the Yakuza kidnaps children of the remaining mafia families in an worry to extort control and pressure them under the Yakuza's thumb. So Castle, feeling somewhat responsible as his five-year vendetta has left the families unable to protect even their absorb children, begins dealing with the Yakuza, which eventually leads to an unlikely alliance with Franco, who's son is one of the kidnapped children.

Guns, knives, throwing stars, explosions, it's all here (well, as far as the explosions, at one point the Punisher is firing a grenade launcher, and the explosions seem less than spectacular, more flashy than squawk boomy) . Not only that but there's a favorable amount of karate. Lundgren, a veteran karate champion himself, performs most all of his have stunts, and there is almost no choreography within the marital arts scenes, as precise artists were archaic, and training in stunt techniques. Does the film quit lawful to the recent character portrayed in the comics? For the most section...some minor changes, along with a few major ones (he never dons a shirt emblazoned with a white skull on it) . I believe one of the main reasons this film was ill received is because amusing fans are a particular picky lot, as they utilize a lot of time getting to know these characters, and tend to have high expectations when someone adapts one of their common characters to the silver camouflage. I read comics from the age of 9 until I was 23, so I have intimate knowledge, or at least I did, of many characters, and I understanding this particular rendition of this character retained most of the significant elements. The main element I didn't care for was his living in the sewers. I brought to mind teenage mutant ninja turtles, which is an altogether different film. I did believe Lundgren face makeup was overdone. I understand why it was done the arrangement it was, to point to the visage of a skull when the light hit his face unprejudiced upright, and it succeeded, but other times he sort of looked like a trot queen. The most painful element of the film was the dialog. I rolled my eyes more than a few times as the delineation between Frank Castle and the Punisher was examined, unsuccessfully. Some of it was extremely corny, more so combined with Lundgren's deadpan delivery. The direction was stunning respectable in most areas, given that this was Goldblatt's second film, his first being the Joe Piscopo/Treat Williams cop flick Dull Heat (1988) . Goldblatt has since returned to editing, which seems a mighty better fit for him. Gossett is fun to leer, but again, given the dialog, he is given some completely harmful lines, but he does seem to try to produce the best of it, earning whatever he got for appearing in this film.

This movie is ample for what it is: an 80's Punisher movie. It's also the type of movie that seperates those who like a gargantuan action movie from the more dogmatic and less fun. You also have the flip side of the coin. These folks can't catch past the Punisher's shirt, his having the base number or gender of kids, the faulty mobsters being the baddies, the cross gain of execution of his family (it's a car bomb in the movie), the contemptible plot of the execution (it's not in Central Park) ...etc. and this is not a pleased bunch. They aren't delighted when Dolph is super-heroic and they aren't delighted when he's more human and his shirt really bugs them.

Do any of these changes really regain in the map of the movie being a tremendous 80's action film. No. It's peaceful a decent and sharp movie, but they would disagree. "The Punisher has on the unsuitable shirt" is a major complaint, and "the current movie will be better" they hoped in vain. "Better" meant more good in every runt detail to the book with no changes.

Now the '04 Punisher has arrived. Other than the shirt is the 2004 Punisher free of many of the "problems" that geekdom has with the '89 movie? Not really. Once again it seems the dreadful guy isn't exactly honest in the recent one, the Punisher's family isn't exactly suitable, and they are killed in Puerto Rico and not in Central Park...etc. and once again there will be folks that won't be gratified. They are very "by the book" and the word escapism apparently is not in their book.

Is the 2004 Punisher a ample movie? I deem so. So is the 1989 Punisher. It is what it is: a stout 80's action movie. Occupy it for what it is and have fun. Check out the '04 Punisher for additional fun BUT, if you question that every single aspect of a movie be like the funny version then don't glance any movie with the title "The Punisher". Ever. The '89 version, as with the '04 version, are strictly for those of us who like a microscopic escapism in the construct of a noble action/adventure movie. The Punisher '89, like the '04 version, is a safe action flick.

Thanks to William Lustig and the capable folks at Blue Underground, serious fans of cinematic weirdness can check out the numerous films of Franco Prosperi and Gualtiero Jacopetti. Who are Prosperi and Jacopetti, you ask? Gracious examine. Before checking out this awesome eight disc tiny edition status, I knew cramped about these two Italian filmmakers. I once heard about "Mondo Cane" years ago, but had never investigated further. Thanks to the voracious appetites awakened in the masses with the advent of DVD technology, I finally got the chance to acquaint myself with this film and the others that followed it. What an experience! The eight discs in the situation consist of "Mondo Cane," "Mondo Cane 2," "Women of the World," "Africa Addio: The Director's Reduce," "Africa Addio: English language version," "Goodbye Uncle Tom: English language version," "Addio Zio Tom: The Director's Chop," and an interview disc with the two directors created especially for this spot called "The Godfathers of Mondo." So what does it all mean? According to these discs, the two filmmakers birthed a phenomenon that led directly to the fresh spate of reality-based media. Most of these films are documentary style epics showing our world--or at least how it looked help in the 1960s--in all of its bizarre and frivolous forms. "Mondo Cane," by the plan, translates as "A Dog's World." An ample title when you examine the films, to be distinct.

Start your experience with "Mondo Cane," "Mondo Cane 2," and "Women of the World." These are the first three films made by the two moviemakers, and are arguably the quirkiest. These three documentaries catch some of the oddest rituals practiced by peoples throughout the world. Many scenes are tame to recent eyes, some are quiet repugnant, and several are unprejudiced tedious droll. For example, you will laugh yourself sick over the "slap the faces" concert seen at the slay of "Mondo Cane 2," although the participants ogle decidedly wretched over their performance. There are plenty of extras on these three discs, including poster stills, trailers, and a few other worthwhile goodies; the recount quality is so great, so crystal positive, that the colors simply buy your breath away.

Perhaps the most controversial film made by Prosperi and Jacopetti was "Africa Addio" ("Farewell, Africa"), an attempt to document the changes in Africa during the time when the European imperial powers granted independence and withdrew from the continent. Ultimately accused of racism by critics for their unflinching portrait of a place gone excited, "Africa Addio" reveals in shocking detail the frightening crimes committed by indigenous Africans against the remaining white settlers and the local wildlife. Enormous segments of the film explain poachers brutally killing animals in the parks residence up by Europeans. Moreover, the killing extends to humans as civil wars atomize out across the continent, with Africans killing each other, slaughtering Muslim minorities, and battling white mercenaries. Two executions caught on camera eventually resulted in charges against Gualtiero Jacopetti, who stood accused of orchestrating the killings for the camera (he was eventually exonerated) . As tough as this film is to inspect, try and peep past the bloodshed and like the panoramic scenery found in nearly every scene. Africa, despite all of its troubles, truly is a handsome land.

Nothing will prepare you for the nightmarish images in "Addio Zio Tom," (Goodbye Uncle Tom) a film made to counter charges of racism stemming from the "Africa Addio" experience. Fashioned as a sort of pseudo documentary where the filmmakers go benefit in time and visit the American South during the slave era, the movie is a grim scrutinize at the degrading conditions faced by Africans brought here as chattel. Every scene is absolutely mind blasting stuff, a horrific recreation of such abhorrent activities as the breeding of slaves, the formulation of scientific racism, hunting down and killing escaped slaves, the sickening conditions of the slave ships, the slave markets, and a billion other objectionable situations. The filmmakers based their film on written records and accounts of slave life, ultimately using the snarl of slavery to perform a statement about contemporary (1960s and 1970s) American urge relations. Be obvious and peer both versions: the English language sever is an entirely different film from the director's cleave. Both are grueling experiences tempered only slightly by Riz Ortolani's Improbable musical accept (Ortolani scored "Mondo Cane" as well and snagged an Academy Award nomination for the song "More" from that film) .

One of the filmmakers says in "The Godfathers of Mondo" that violence is a allotment of life that should appear in any attempt to document the human experience. I agree wholeheartedly, but that doesn't form these two films any easier to stare. Thanks, Blue Underground, for a truly memorable experience.

There is no denying the importance of the films of Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi as they have influenced everything from hardcore dread films ie Cannibal Holocaust to broadcast news and the reality TV craze of today. Blue Underground in an ambitious depart have set aside out this big 8 disc box plot (microscopic to 10,000 copies) which should more than satisfy any mondo fan.

The first two discs are Mondo Cane and Mondo Cane 2. Goodbye Uncle Tom is clearly a one of a kind spectacle and in my humble notion the best disc in the plot.

The final disc is a doco on the filmmakers themselves, rounding out what is an awesome boxset!

Luc Besson has written an action packed amusing book of a movie with Wasabi. Jean Reno plays a tough, violent cop but with a lonely heart and a past. Years before, his Japanese girlfriend left him for no clear reason. Reno hasn't been able to fancy since.

Reno is establish on suspension with the police after an especially violent episode, and he is 'encouraged' to return to Japan when he discovers his lost care for has impartial died and left him her heir. Suprise! When Reno arrives in Japan, the action really takes off. To deliver you more would spoil the fun...

Wasabi takes off with a pulsing electronic beat from the opening scene and keeps engaging at a like a flash race. Positive, there are area holes... distinct, some things don't create sense. So what? This isn't a film you explore to do you reflect. Quite the opposite... no thinking, honest quick paced action with some light comedy mixed in for agreeable measure, all in a sleek technocolor package.

I judge myself exquisite knowledgeable about films, but in purchasing Wasabi (2001), I had no prior knowledge about the movie other than it was written by Luc Besson and starred Jean Reno, who were both eager in Nikita (1990) and The Professional (1994), two amazing films worth any action movie fan's time. Given the talent eager in Wasabi, I belief it would be a exquisite worth looking into, and I wasn't disappointed.

Reno stars a Hubert, a retired secret government operative who is now a no nonsense French cop who seems to follow the guidelines within the Dirty Harry Law Enforcement Manual, that's to say his methods, while coarse, secure results. The films dives headfirst into the action as we view Hubert single-handedly bust up a transvestite bank robbery ring. While Hubert is very splendid at what he does, his gracious notes that that is all he does, as Hubert has no life. That, along with pressures from a local politician with regards to Hubert's' weak school tactics, forces Hubert's boss to build him on extended vacation, with a recommendation that he basically win a life.

Wasabi mixes a very reliable blend of action, comedy, and a pinch of drama fair successfully. The action is ravishing staunch throughout, and is more of the droll book variety, like what you might peer in a Jackie Chan film. The comedy comes mostly in the fabricate of Hubert's contact in Japan, a fellow Frenchman named Momo, whom Hubert worked with many years ago when he was a government operative. Momo reminded me of a chubbier version of Choose Schneider, except a bit funnier. The drama, while show but not over done, comes in the manufacture of Hubert and Yumi trying to arrive to terms with the fact that they are now all they have. While the combination of these three elements doesn't allow for a whole lot of substance within the anecdote, that mattered tiny as this was honest a fun, gripping trail I enjoyed all the plan to the raze. What's really spellbinding is how noteworthy this French-made film looks like an American actioneer.

The two-hour program, written and produced by David Axelrod, recalls the uproar over Copernican theory at a time when Roman Catholic theology placed a stationary earth at the center of the universe. This is no dry science lesson but a dramatized vision of the contradictory forces pulling on Galileo, who was both a scientist and a devout Catholic. He lived during the Inquisition, in an era when unpopular ideas were grounds for torture or being burned at the stake.

The program was adapted from '''Galileo's Daughter,''' Dava Sobel's best-selling book based on letters written to Galileo by his daughter, who became a nun. She took the name Maria Celeste, perhaps in deference to her father's fascination with the stars, and her letters issue a touching desire to understand his obsession.

His feelings for her are less positive, because his letters to her have not been found. But Galileo was a prolific writer, expressing his scientific theories as literature in his '''Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems.''' He had the well-known arrogance to combat prevailing wisdom. '''I render grace to God that it has delighted him to beget me alone the first observer of an admirable thing kept hidden all these ages,''' he said. But he would die humbled by the Inquisition; his writings were banned. In dramatic recreations, Simon Callow plays Galileo with dejected grandeur.
I've been enjoying learning about influential scientists lately, and this was a top-notch resource in my self-education. It was really well made, combining standard documentary techniques with reenactments of episodes from Galileo's life, making for a program that's very informative and also easy to recognize. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the history of science.

My wife and I took a chance on this and rented it when we couldn't pick up anything else. We haven't seen any other Apatow films -- they all looked a small too adolescent for our tastes. We had read some great reviews of this, though, so we gave it a shot. It was a trusty surprise -- very clever, well-written, and genuinely humorous. Colossal cast, and all give trustworthy performances. Lots of steady talent went into this. A very luscious movie.

"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is another smashing success brought to you by Judd Apatow and friends. This time it is Jason Segel's turn to shine and he certainly does not dissapoint with a script that is both laugh out loud comical and emotionally impartial.

While one has near to examine Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, and even Segel himself to be on point because of their past turns in other Apatow produced comedies, it is the newcomers that really tag.

Like Christpher Mint-Plaisse as Fogel in "Superbad" it is the ability to come by unique and novel comedic voices that have largely contributed to the success of past Apatow movies like "Superbad", "Knocked up", and even "40 year dilapidated virgin".

"Sarah Marshall" introduces the british Comedian Russell Note to American audiences as Aldous Snow the ultra-ridiculous british rockstar/new boyfriend of Sarah Marshall. Trace has dynamite droll timing and is certainly willing to do anything for a laugh. His interactions with Jonah Hill whose character is obsessed with him are both creepy and laugh out loud humorous.

the other actual suprise is Mila Kunis. While I enjoyed her as jackie on "That 70's Reveal", her work here is truly relevatory. While she is essentially playing the requiste "dream girl" she is able to give the share some genuine depth while giving the movie a valid warmth.

The other standout for me was Bill Hader who is funnier everytime I scrutinize him. Most will probably peer him from his work in Superbad as Seth Rogen's partner and in this he plays segel's step-brother who is not jumpy to teach Peter exactly how it is.
I also feel I need to mention Kristen Bell who plays Sarah Marshall. While the role is rather thankless she is quite laughable and gives the character sincere bite. She also nails perhaps the most just scene I have ever seen in a romantic comedy when she finally tells Peter why it didnt work between them. Both actors shine in the scene, but her work is both fair and heartbreaking and gives her character a depth that I certainly was not expecting.

For the lawful tupac shakur fans, don't prefer this dvd. this dvd doesn't have any live footage or music by tupac on the dvd. It also doesn't have any special features as well. there are no interveiws with finish friends and family members. this dvd basically tells tupac's legend using picutres that is lead by a narrator. this dvd was poorly inflamed. the pictures that they dilapidated in the dvd they reused them when tellig the sage (cheap)

This DVD is literally an atrocity. There are no genuine words to report how poorly made this "documentary" really is. I sold this DVD attend without getting a chubby refund, proof of how desperate I was to salvage rid of it. This is an unauthorized DVD and and it was not completely legal. The commentary was infamous and they even showed Tupac's autopsy photo. I do not recommend this DVD.

'Final Fantasy' is a computer game that has gone through countless versions and editions. Taken as a whole, this mythos is probably one of the best know games in its genre. It is distinct from the beginning of this film that Sony and Hironbu Sakaguchi (producer, director, and writer) were intent on topping an already lustrous history of graphic accomplishments. In a sense, 'The Spirits Within' represents a share of history in the making. It is the first film that presents a startling approximation of life using only automation.

The location is simple. An asteroid falling to earth carries within it a host of phantom creatures that seem hell hooked on destroying earthly life. Civilization has been reduced to living in shielded enclaves, and it is only a matter of time before the planet becomes a skittish wasteland. Aki Ross and her mentor, Dr. Sid, are working on the creation of a neutralizing 'wave' based on the eight basic phantom life forms. General Hein does not trust Dr. Sid's theories about a Gaia, or planetary spirit, and wants to expend a large orbital laser cannon to demolish the recent meteor, possible destroying the earth in the process. The conflict between these points of notion and their shattering effects on the planet are the meat of the film.

Captain Gray Edwards, once Aki's lover, crystallizes this struggle between the material world of violent reaction and the spiritual world of growth and synthesis. The film plays a bit like an evolved 'Starship Troopers.' In many ways, it presents the same visual image, and deals with the same issues. The plight for the director and the viewer is to accept past the aesthetic graphic work to experience the abiding spiritual faith that is its meaning. Ironically, the film itself is a metaphor for the issues it expresses.

It is almost futile to discuss the film's animation and gain. They are so far above what we are extinct to that the required superlatives sound trite. In essence, the animation staff dwelling out to originate something that is even more dependable than life, and to a tremendous extent, they have succeeded. This hyperrealism, combined with an almost ballet like feeling of choreography form a sense of moment that makes this seem far more than an action film. The overall animation is carefully balanced so as to maintain the focus on the characters. Even so, this film has such a sensory accomplish that the viewer is tempted to forget the place and simply inspect the shroud.

The necessary DVD provides the film and a whole dwelling of commentaries (directing crew, animation and staging, composer, and production staff), plus the usual trailers, etc. In the special edition, a second disk adds an extensive 'Making of...' segment, the entire screenplay and some analysis of character, vehicle, and prop originate. Technically, this is an well-known film, despite its simplistic set and characters. For the first time, the definition of what is acting and what is animation is being challenged in a notion provoking fashion.

The first time I fired up FF7 on my playstation console 5 years ago, I marveled at the opening cinematics. At that point, I understanding it would be the coolest thing if someone made a movie fair like it. On July 11 at 4:30pm I witnessed that dream arrive lawful.

I could say it was all I was expecting and more, but that wouldn't be entirely proper. The games took 40-50+ hours to complete with a chronicle that had numerous twists to the area and character developement that went far beyond some bestselling novels. While I consider it would be enormous to explore a 6 hour Final Fantasy movie that had such an intricate place, I realize that would be unrealistic for a feature film. All things considered, I assume Square did an outstanding job compressing the sage into the time allotted.

The script could have been written a miniature bit better, but I contemplate it was written the diagram it was so the average movie-goer would sustain up with the location. I know I didn't have any danger following Dr. Sid's theories about Gaia and what the Phantom's really were. But that could've been from playing the games.. I saw sort of the belief in FF7, with everyone and everything having a spirit.

The cg was fantastic and tte physics were.. well, conclude. Although I contemplate in 65 years, we may be able to bend the laws of physics a bit more, so this could possibly demolish up mimicing true life in 2065. I've read some film critics comment about the lack of consistency with the Phantoms, how they can proceed through walls and suck the life out of someone, yet can be harmed by frail weapons. Those guns didn't glance old-fashioned to me... energy weapons would have the attain they did. Opinion: those film critics who commented about that didn't know what they were talking about.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I intend to gaze it a few more times before it leaves theatres. This quite possibly gets my vote for the Best Movie of All time.

Although "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" is the best film released in the 90's, it has not received the significant acclaim it so justly deserves. The well-written screenplay, tailor-made for Andrew Dice Clay, is a esteem record about a private investigator and his secretary. In a qualified performance, Clay has restrained his usual humor to invent a realistic film about the anxiety of being a Rock and Roll detective. He had reasons for leaving the police force, which results in harsh treatment from Lt. Amos, convincingly played by Ed O'Neill. Wayne Newton, as the rotten Julian Grendel almost steals the present from the rest of the cast.

I remember the early days of Don Rickles, the master of insult humor. His career was saved when his Las Vegas crowd rallied to let the public know that he was really a nice guy. Unfortunately, the Dice-Man didn't have that attend, and his 80's update of Rickles-type humor was blown out of proportion by a misguided, politically-correct public that wouldn't know a humorous joke if it was strapped to their privates. Dice IS humorous, and he IS a nice guy. His humor is probably a "GUY" thing, but he talks no differently than anyone I've known who lived in a college dorm. Okay. Enough about the misunderstood Dice. "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane", an early trouble from Renny Harlin, is always comical and always consuming. The screenplay is clever, a whisper parody of dull detective films, with many novel ideas, tailor-made to the many talents of Andrew Dice Clay. Dice is quite charming, always self-effacing and having a mountainous time. The assembled cast is large, with Gilbert Gottfried in a natural role, a heavenly snide performance from Wayne Newton, as well as Robert Englund (in a non-Freddy role, but composed unfavorable) . Lauren Holly is a stabilizing factor, and Priscilla Presley (remember the "Naked Gun" films? ) is as straight as ever. Really luscious is Maddie Corman (the shrimp sister from "Some Kind of Extraordinary") as Zuzu Petals (I've not been able to observe "It's a Astounding Life" without thinking of Maddie...) Ed O'Neill's rendition of "Booty Time" may stick with you.Andrew Dice Clay's humor may not appeal to all, but this is a fun film and the Dice-Man is quite endearing. Don't deem...Delight In!

I've been waiting for this movie to reach out on DVD so I can replace my well-worn VHS copy. I faded to discover this film a lot as a teenager because I've always had an interest in "deserted south pacific islands" ("Gilligan's Island" was one of my favourite childhood shows, I loved "Swiss Family Robinson", I dreamed of visiting Tahiti and Fiji when a 4th grade teacher spoke about such islands existing, and a piece of me level-headed fantasizes about the Peace Corps) .

This film is a Disney classic which mild holds up well today. I'm not clear if savvy modern-day children will like this kind of film, but I imagine they will. The humor is timeless and Dick Van Dyke is the sort of actor that children gravitate to (perhaps "the Mary Poppins execute") . I like this retelling of the "Robinson Crusoe" yarn, modernizing it and adding remarkable humor as well. The chimp as sidekick is tall.

My well-liked portion of the movie is when Lt Crusoe meets the island ladies and they express pidgin to comedic accomplish (like using "cow-cow") . There were so many lines in this film that my sister and I loved to quote to one another, such as "Kabuna say 'women got rights!'" Honest the word "Kabuna" sounds humorous when you say it. I cherish how Lt Crusoe plays with the natives' superstitious opinion in idols, by making Kabuna (an Easter Island looking tiki rock carving that the island natives adore) sing with a booming stutter. Ah, to be stranded on an island corpulent of blooming native women! This film is kind of a parody about the women's liberation movement, as Lt Crusoe changes the women to be less submissive and more independent, which has an unintended consequence for him...as they amble after him and he's composed dreaming about his girl in the U.S.

This one is a classic and will definitely be a section of my collection. I could inspect it over and over and unexcited laugh myself humorous. Unfortunately, Disney doesn't execute movies like this anymore, but I hope they won't even attempt to remake it (as they did with other classics like "The Parent Trap" and "Freaky Friday") . This one is timeless and a perfect Disney comedy of the bygone era.
It's been a long time since I've seen this film, and I remember it to be an arresting slapstick farce with Dick Van Dyke in top design as the title character, a descendant of the recent Robinson Crusoe who, while on training mission, crash-lands on a tropical island. He must fend for himself while awaiting rescue, with only fellow castaway Floyd the astrochimp and a native girl he names Wednesday to retain him company. It's a amusing and fast-paced lark, and very typical of '60's Disney product.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this version of the film for consume at this time. Here are five reasons why:

1. Like "Million Dollar Duck" and "Barefoot Executive", "Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N." is being released to DVD in a sluggish, fullscreen version instead of the family-friendly 1:66:1 aspect ratio it was originally filmed in. As a film purist, I simply refuse to retract anything that isn't presented in the format it was originally filmed in. That Disney is dumping used films on DVD in the obsolete fullscreen VHS format shows a total lack of respect for the filmmakers and the consumer alike.

2. I gawk no indication on the packaging that this film has been digitally restored. Therefore, I must achieve the DVD contains the same tired broken-down print of the film that was originally released on VHS. Even more galling is the fact that the sound hasn't been upgraded to stereo, but according to the packaging is presented in "mono." I ask consumers everywhere: why bother replacing primitive VHS films with DVDs that are of no better quality than what you already have?

3. There are absolutely no extras presented with this film. No "making of" documentary, no commentary with Mr. Van Dyke, no new theatrical trailer, nothing. That Disney released this film with no extras makes the lack of a widescreen print even more annoying, since there is more than enough room on a DVD to note both fullscreen and widescreen versions of the film. Other companies, especially MGM/UA, do it all this time. Why can't Disney? It's simple: laziness and lack of respect for the consumer.

4. This DVD is ridiculously expensive, expecially at the fresh retail label of $19.95, which is a chubby $10 more than most bare-bones DVDs are priced by other companies. Disney has always been known for gouging its fans at the cash register, but this is ridiculous.

5. 1+2+3+4=ONE Broad RIPOFF. Once again, Disney rips-off its consumers, and they'll continue to laugh all the contrivance to the bank unless we engage a stand. Therefore, I ask fans everywhere:

BOYCOTT ANY DISNEY DVD THAT IS NOT RESTORED AND PRESENTED IN WIDESCREEN FORMAT. That's the only draw we'll ever derive through to these greedy corporate pinheads.

I have been a fan of "Smallville" from the beginning, and was very gratified both as a viewer and a fan at how this season turned out. In exclaim opposition to season four's disastrous memoir arch spicy Isobel and the Teague family attempting to manipulate Lana, this one takes a worthy more serious (and yet palatable) path through Clark's choices and their ultimate consequences. It also shifts the worship interest from Clark and Lana to Lex and Lana, something they have been hinting at four seasons and only now have the courage to bring out.

Lex Luthor and Jonathan Kent do battle to become plot senator, Lionel Luthor switches sides (again), Clark consummates his esteem for Lana and then is forced to give her up, Chloe starts working for the Daily Planet, one of the leading cast members is killed off, and it winds up in the most explosive, dramatic, and much season finale of the series.

It's rare that I have enjoyed almost every episode in a season, but there is some solid stuff here -- "Lexmas" is a heart-ripping "what if" featuring Lex's alternate life if he is to settle the path of genuine, with a sadistic twist in the second half to do Stephen King catch a step back; "Tomb" is a fantastically fun ghost anecdote in which Allison Mack plays an alternate Chloe; "Reckoning" brings two consecutive deaths and a painful funereal; "Mercy" revolves around the charisma between Martha and Lionel when a manic madman forces them to acquire their plan through his house of horrors; and five or so episodes revolve around the steadily building seduction of Lana Lang. Tom Welling also makes his directorial debut (and a gracious one at that) in "Fragile," an ironic twist of fate since it contains a super-hot first kiss between Lana and Lex at the destroy.

I am a shrimp disappointed that there aren't more features (one would have conception at least "Reckoning" and "Fragile" would accept a commentary, and no blooper reel is heart-broken, since many of the actors have mentioned the various pranks and oops! on station) but will be glad to beget this season. I study forward with large anticipation the possibilities the next will bring.
So noteworthy changes in the fifth season of Smallville that it is hard to comment on aspects of the season without spoiling it for those who have not seen it yet.

However, in the most general terms, Smallville continues as one of the most enchanting fantasy shows on television. A modern character played by James Marsters of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fame joins the cast. He plays a professor at the college that Clark attends. Of course, no one is who they appear to be in this narrative.

Themes of loyalty and betrayal prevail. As Clark, Lois and Chloe enter college and a novel phase of life they must originate harder decisions. Lex continues to develop choices that will separate him from his humanity and his friendship with Clark Kent. Clark continues to push away Lex and Lana, even though at times it seems he will reconcile with them. Lois continues to be flip, curt and annoying. It is bewitching that not only Clark but most of the main characters seemed doomed to have no sex life--as if the assumed celibacy of this superhero is infectious somehow.

In general the season is darker and less hopeful than prior seasons. Despite this it continues to fascinate and enthrall.

To be moral, Ralph Bakshi's challenging version of "The Lord of the Rings" only made it halfway through "The Two Towers" before suddenly concluding. My thought was that because Bakshi did not accumulate to "The Return of the King," the rights were available for Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin, Jr. to do their enjoy version for television in 1980 in the same style they had employed for "The Hobbit." In fact, Orson Bean is support to do the voices of not only Bilbo but also Frodo, and John Huston returns to provide a perefect say for the wizard Gandalf.

"The Return of the King" certainly begins in the middle of things, with Sam (Roddy McDowell) trying to rescue the captive Frodo from the orcs and Gollum scrambling after his "precious" ring. Those who have read the trilogy will be able to capture up the myth without any plight, but for the uninitated who have to try and like this without some sort of "Previously on 'The Lord of the Ring,'" it is going to be collected disconcerting. Clearly this version is geared for the kids, in the broad tradition of "The Hobbit," which was far and away the best of these three inviting Tolkein films. Adults will undoubtedly cringe at some of these moments, as when the Orcs vow "Where There's a Whip There's a Draw," but hopefully you will come by a few microscopic moments that you can be pleased. The chief charm of "The Return of the King" for me is that it does a decent job with my celebrated scene of the Trilogy, when Éowyn, the shield maiden of Rohirrim engages the Lord of the Nazgul in mortal combat during the Battle of Pellennor Fields.

Glenn Yarborough again does the music, as he did with "The Hobbit," but with notably less success. Except for the first diminutive ditty about "Frodo of the Nine-Fingers and the Ring of Doom," the songs this time around add nothing to the telling of the memoir. When you assume all the immense moments from the book that were nick because of time constraints and then add to that list those that were jettisoned because of Yarborough's songs, it is the proverbial example of adding insult to injury.

The single biggest reason to recognize this movie is that the star himself was in fact the single most decorated war hero of World War Two, and he is convincing here playing himself with dignity, sincerity, and humility, which, of course, Audie Murphy always had in spades. The movie was adopted from his best-selling autobiography, which my Mom let me read after blackening out all of the four letter slang (as she called it) . Perhaps it shows that he was my childhood hero, and I aloof have a personalized autographed photo somewhere reading "Thanks, Barry, for being my fan" that a friend's mom got for three or four of us ten year olds at the time this movie was released in the mid 1950s. It was the first movie I saw ten times. And I wasn't alone; Murphy was a national icon.

The movie truly is a classic; tightly directed, poignant, just, proper, and showing curious combat without being gory or maudlin. It sometimes decends into travelogue movie-theater type newsreel moments, but these are thankfully rare and forgiveable. This is one of my approved war films for several reasons. One is that it is always keen to gawk how a book is translated into film, and in this case, Murphy's myth is told very well. And I can't remember many other films where the author plays himself! Though not the best war film ever made, it does disclose the legend the diagram Murphy wanted it told, through the eyes of the everyday soldier.

What makes the film stand out to me is that Murhpy gives a more gutsy performance than most people can realize. It was learned many years later that he suffered from recurring nightmares about the horrors he saw in war, and one can only imagine what it was like to have to recreate so many painful memories, especially the scene where his best friend(played by Charles Drake) dies in his arms. Though the character had a different name, the scene is almost exactly the diagram it happened.

Perhaps what I recall from this is how war can so drastically change a person. Murhphy entered the war as an underage oprphan who initially was plan unfit for combat, and went on to become our most decorated combat soldier. While it does fetch a miniature cliched at times, this movie is exquisite because it allows us to peek the proper hero is the popular foot soldier, without whom the war could not have been won.
